News from Nevada

The newly formed ladies chapter (Women of the Wilderness) of the Mule Deer Foundation located in Reno will be having their first annual Ladies Luncheon on Saturday, October 27, 2007. This luncheon is geared towards women who not only like to hunt, but also enjoy being in the outdoors. We will have a live auction that will include jewelry, framed art, leather goods, kayak, rifle and other outdoor gear. Tickets are just $40 and proceeds will help fund outdoor programs for women. For tickets call me at 775-741-1296 or Shawna Huckabey at 775-530-6967.

The Reno Chapter has plenty of tickets left for the New Zealand Red Stag Hunt. This hunt is a five-day hunt for one hunter and one non-hunter and includes lodging, airfare and transportation. Tickets are $60 each with only 1,000 being sold. Call Billie Gregory at 775-741-1494 or get the raffle entry form here.

This hunt has been donated by Kiwi Safaris, and proceeds from this raffle will go toward habitat restoration in Nevada. As many of you know, Nevada, along with Idaho, Utah and California, have had a horrendous fire season again this year. It is necessary for us to raise money to help NDOW, BLM, and the USFS purchase seed in order to restore the burn areas so that mule deer and other wildlife can continue to survive.

The Winnemucca Chapter is looking for volunteers that are interested in becoming part of the committee to continue the fundraising efforts in the Winnemucca area. This chapter has funded several water development projects, hunter education, and the Nevada Outdoor Schools Habitat Restoration Projects. If you and/or a friend are interested in becoming part of this committee to continue the annual fundraising auction/dinner, please contact me at 775-741-1296 or by e-mail at fgregory@muledeer.org. I would like to thank Jim, Mark, Tom and the other dedicated committee members for their efforts in raising thousands of dollars to help with mule deer habitat.

The Elko Chapter is hosting the “Hunters Classic” Golf Tournament in Spring Creek on October 6. If you are interested in participating in this tournament contact Farley Hicks at 775-934-3917.

I am also looking for volunteers interested in becoming part of the MDF team in Battle Mountain, Lovelock, Fernley, Fallon, Tonopah, Pahrump and Yerington, Nev., as well as Susanville, Bridgeport, Portola, and Lee Vining, Calif. For more information or to set up a meeting, contact me at 775-741-1296 or by e-mail at fgregory@muledeer.org.

News from Arizona

The East Valley Chapter, located in Mesa, hosted their annual banquet on August 4 at the Windemere Hotel. Every year this banquet continues to grow. Last year approximately 85 people attended this banquet, and this year attendance was over 100.

Throughout the year the chapter was selling raffle tickets for a rifle, and the lucky winner was Eric Faulkner. Congratulations to Eric!! The chapter netted over $14,000. Way to go Art, Jon, Marsha and Al. A big thanks also goes out to all of the other friends and family who helped this committee acquire donations, helped with setup and tear down, and provided support the day of the banquet.

Currently, MDF has active chapters in St. John’s, Mesa and Kingman. The Flagstaff Chapter is in the process of reorganizing, and interest has sparked in the Tucson area. If you would like to become part of any of these chapters, please contact me at 775-741-1296 or by e-mail at fgregory@muledeer.org.
