Nevada, Arizona and Texas Regional News

March/April 2008

Fawna Gregory, MDF Regional Director

As banquet season gets into full swing, I am excited to have two new chapters holding their first annual banquets this year. Pioche, Nev., located about 180 miles northeast of Las Vegas, is nestled in the Meadow Valley. The small town reminds you of years gone by like so many small towns in Nevada do. With wooden sidewalks and quaint shops, this town takes you back to the “Good Ole Days.” The banquet date is March 29. For tickets contact Cory Lytle at 775-962-5417.

Another new chapter is the Longhorn Chapter located in Allen, Texas. Neil Clatterbuck previously resided in Reno and was part of the Northern Nevada chapter. His passion for mule deer and knowing that there is a need to conserve mule deer habitat for future generations, his own two children included, prompted him to start this chapter in Texas. Although Allen is located on the opposite side of the state from mule deer country, Neil felt is was important to spread the word about the Mule Deer Foundation and our mission. The Longhorn Chapter will be hosting their first banquet this summer on July 26. If you would like more information, please contact Neil at 540-421-9777.

My territory continues to grow from Arizona, Nevada and Texas, to the Eastern Slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Quincy, Calif. They will be having an organizational meeting on Feb. 13 at the Portola Library. Quincy and Portola are two small towns that sit in the Plumas National Forest along Hwy. 70 in Northern California. If you would like to be a part of this committee, please contact me at 775-741-1296 or by e-mail at fgregory@muledeer.org.

St. John’s, Ariz., will be hosting their second annual fundraiser dinner and auction on March 29. The Navajo Nation has once again donated a general mule deer tag and an antelope tag on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation. If you would like more information on the tags or the banquet, please contact Don Borg at 928-337-4387. St. John’s sits high in northeastern Arizona bordering New Mexico.

The Round Mountain, Gardnerville and Reno, Nev., Chapters are looking for volunteers to help on committees to plan their annual fundraisers as well as work on projects throughout the state. If you would like to help, or if you would like to start a chapter in your area, please contact me at 775-741-1296 or by e-mail at fgregory@muledeer.org.

Wildfires have destroyed a large portion of the state of Nevada over the last two years, and mule deer need our help more than ever. State agencies have been working hard to reseed and rehabilitate burn areas, but they can not do it alone. Please help MDF, NDOW, USFS, BLM and other conservation groups in restoring Nevada to prime mule deer country by joining a committee in your area.
