MDF Youth Day
California Kids Learn about Hunting and Fishing at MDF Youth Day

A fish to remember. Your first!
On Saturday, April 26, 2003, MDF’s Livermore-Pleasanton Chapter held a Youth Day at the Livermore-Pleasanton Rod and Gun Club in Livermore, Calif. Approximately 60 youngsters attended the event where they participated in classroom and outdoor activities. The event focused on educating kids about hunting, fishing and wildlife. Many participated in sporting activities for the first time.
Children were divided into groups (red group, blue group, green group, etc.) and assigned group leaders who led them through morning classroom seminars on range and hunter safety, survival basics, antler identification, and falconry. The California Hawking Club presented the falconry seminar and brought red-tailed and Harris hawks, a golden eagle and a kestrel to delight the kids. Afternoon sessions allowed kids to receive hands-on training in trap shooting and archery. Younger members participated in the BB gun and paintball shooting range. Fishing activities took place all day.

Wilderness Unlimited and its volun-
teers provided the fish tank and assisted
with the fishing activities.
About 30 volunteers coordinated the event, including many MDF chapter committee members. Wilderness Unlimited and its volunteers provided the fish tank and assisted with the fishing activities. Livermore High School Natural Resource instructor, Pat Kirkendall, contributed trout left over from a high school project. California Department of Fish and Game Warden, John Wheeler, conducted a safety instruction seminar. The Livermore-Pleasanton Rod and Gun Club donated the facilities and insurance coverage.
Key volunteers included Laurie Ambrosino, Jim and Pamela Brooks, Ray Brown, Cathy and Mike Cockrane, Rick Escover, Rich Fletcher, Rob Fletcher, Dan Jason, Jerry Jenaro, Terry Ludlow, Tom Mitchell, and Gary Pacheco.
