Purchase of Seed for Burned Area

November 2006

The Mule Deer Foundation's Mile High and Buckhorn Chapters are using Chapter Rewards dollars to provide funding to purchase seed for a recent burn approximately four miles southwest of Rifle, Colo. MDF funds will be used to pay for the purchase of seed (including Sagebrush, Saltbush, and other forbs to benefit deer).

The burn area consists of approximately 850 acres covering private land and BLM land. The seed purchased will contain a variety of shrubs/forbs which are beneficial to deer. The area provides year-round habitat for mule deer. The area will be reseeded in the forth quarter of 2006 by aircraft. The urgency to complete the project is to get seed placed in the burn area in 2006 so that it may be germinated in early 2007 to avoid cheat grass infestation.

This project should be completed by December 2006.
