South Hills' Woody Browse Replanted After Devastating Fire
Magic Valley Chapter volunteers help restore mule deer habitat
More than 60 people, including Mule Deer Foundation volunteers from the Magic Valley Chapter of Twin Falls, Idaho, joined the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on April 12, 2003, to plant 7,500 bitterbrush seedlings on the South Hills, Sugar Loaf Mountain mule deer winter range (15 miles southeast of Twin Falls). A devastating fire in 1991 destroyed most of the South Hills' woody browse plants preferred by mule deer. The planting project will help bring back vital forage needed for deer survival during harsh winter months.
Peggy Bartel, BLM Habitat Biologist, coordinated the project with the Magic Valley Chapter and the Idaho Fish and Game Department. MDF also contributed $1,700 to purchase the seedlings.
