National Wild Turkey Federation’s JAKES Day Grant
The Northern Badlands Chapter has made a grant to the NWTF’s JAKES Day in 2007 and 2008. JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship. The day camp is put on by the Central Dakota Strutters Chapter of the NWTF with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is a -free- one day camp for kids age 5-12, in which all receive particpation gifts and lunch. Around 90 youth and 30 adults annually participate in the event. The youth are split into groups in which they are able to particpate in informational and hands-on outdoors experiences. Some of the educational activities included, big-game and big-game huting, waterfowl hunting, turkey hunting, predator hunting, and archery. Two volunteers of The Northern Badlands Chapter of the MDF conducted a half-hour seminar on big-game and big-game hunting techniques. Over 120 participants attented the seminar. Each youth participant was given a set of MDF earplugs and an MDF magazine.
